Savory, not sweet (Breakfast, not me!)

Finally.  I branched out and made something savory for breakfast.  I've been staying with what I like....(sweet) and I knew I would have to branch out and try to please all of my guest taste buds.  I started last week with something healthy, and now something savory.

I went to the Half Price Bookstore last week and totally scored.  Seven cookbooks for $40.   One of them was Pillsbury Bake-Off Prize Winning Recipes.  First recipe I tried was a huge success.  I am so very excited.  

Look. How. Pretty.  It is so perfect and I am in love.  Not only can I please my savory meat lovers, but I can remove the Canadian Bacon, toss in the red peppers or something veggie like and viola...everyone is happy.  Love. It.  

And.....I got to used my awesome garage sale find, super cute red dishes.

The recipe is so easy and shows so well.  Expect to eat this if when you come and stay with us.

Garage Sale Finds Make Me Happy!

I love garage sales.  It's no secret.  Always have and always will.  I love when I am in the kitchen in the morning, drinking my coffee and watching the sun raise and my husband comes in from his morning workout in our hood and excitedly tells me...Honey!  Let's go, I saw at least 4 garage sales.  Best husband ever.

So today I am going to show off some my finds.  I am focusing lately on kitchen and baking things and for that perfect item for the bed and breakfast.

First item are these adorable sets of glass storage bowls.  Five glass bowls, with tops that not only match, but actually fit...and no cracks or chips.  Roosters and Sunflowers, both bright and cheery.  I can store things, or I can mix small things.  $10....probably a bit pricey for a garage sale, but definitely unique and nothing I have seen before. 

Next up, red ceramic bowls in a pretty rod iron thingy.

I can picture some blueberry compote in one and strawberry compote...lots of possibilities.  Or just a home for my loose keys and change.  $3.00  Bargain!

This is Copper.  Copper is one of our rescue dogs.  He's 1.5 years old.  When he was about 4 months old and living at his foster house he got bit by a copperhead....his fantastic foster mom, heard him right away, grabbed him, sped the vet, and viola, he survived.  I. Love. Him.  Point of the picture....Copper is laying on a one of my garage sale finds....a UT baseball jersey...$10.  Our son was giddy.

It was quite the successful morning.  What does this have to do with baking? has to do with gathering fun stuff for the bed and breakfast....and Copper will be at our bed and breakfast, hopefully not using the jersey at a pillow.

Healthy cupcakes? You betcha!

As you can see from my most all of my posts, I love baking, fattening, gooey, sugary treats.  I should need to learn savory items  and healthy items.  I am called out frequently by Donna, the most amazing life coach, ever, that I must start cooking healthy items...for the sake of my health, blah,  blah, blah.  And Robin, pointed out that not every guest at our bed and breakfast will want fattening, gooey, sugary treats ALL of the time, EVERY day.  Sooooooooooooooooooooo, Donna and Robin, this is for you.  It's a start. 

Who cooks with applesauce????  I do!!! I do!!!  I'm not sure what it replaced, but I have to say...super tasty, moist and it satisfies my need for a dessert.  Slap on a Hello Kitty Edible Cake Decoration and not only is it super duper good, but so very cute.

A Haven for Vee

I have come to love my monthly Note Card Parties.  A Haven For Vee hosts it and I find myself excited to see everyone's pictures and putting more time and effort into some of the shots that I take. 
Here are some random shots that I took while I was visiting the Boothe House Bed & Breakfast in Gonzales.  Just pretty flowers really.  
I am actually more impressed that the trees are actually in focus instead of the flowers, which were the main purpose of the pictures.  Just kinda cool.  I think.

I have a weakness for flowers.  I love taking pictures of them.  They just make me smile inside.  
This picture is nuts.  I think it is so very pretty.  I can't figure out if it's blurry or not.  It was the morning sun and it was making it such a different color.  Love. It. 
And finally, my favorite.  This came to me, via a text message, from my Hub.  He wasn't able to come with me for the weekend (here is how that conversation went:  Me:  Love of my life, do you want to come with me to clean and cook and scrub for three days straight?  Him:  Uh, no, I was thinking I'd go fishing, since I am home this weekend and I am hardly ever home on weekends because I'm off speaking, but......if you really want me to, I will.  Me:  Nope, just catch dinner for us, cuz I will be famished, I'm sure).  So when he was out on a walk one afternoon, he saw this gaggle of roses, took a picture and sent me the sweetest text.  I ♥ him.  I'm one lucky girl.

Mixed Berry Crisp

My second blog entry talked about my desire to make food that can be multi-purposed.  Dessert AND breakfast.  I was ready to make something fruity and I was going to go to my old standby, Cherry Peach Cobbler.  So easy and so fabulous and so light and so very berry.  I mentioned it to Hub and he gently said, what about a crisp?  What??  A crisp?  I've never made one. Cooking with oats confuses me...1 minutes oats, 5 minute oats, rolled oats, steel oats, blah,  blah, blah.

Why make a crisp when my cobbler is A+  Every. Single. Time.  Turns out Hub likes Crisps better then Cobblers.  Who knew?  Not I.   So I went in search for a crisp that s.p.e.l.l.e.d. o.u.t. what kind of oats to use.

Thank you William Sonoma for having a Rhubarb and Strawberry Crisp; although I immediately ruled out Rhubarb, as that is like sending me to Home Depot for some tool....too overwhelming and no clue what that is and what it tastes like.  So I added blackberries, blueberries and strawberries.

I must say, I was very impressed.  It was tasty and pretty and it made me happy.  Turns out, not only my husband prefers but so does my number one "tester".  Who knew?  I've learned so much with just this one crisp.  Toss some whipped cream or ice cream on this and viola, dessert.  Add a nice side dish of Panna Cotta, it's now a breakfast dish.  I've achieved my goal....multi-talented food. 

So if you were when you are at our Bed and Breakfast, would you want this in the morning, or as a nighttime treat? Both, of course...with a nice cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Gooey Goodness

Oh the choices of what to make....cookies, brownies, cakes, candy, pies or fudge....the list could go on and on.  Chocolate or no chocolate, frosting or not?  Of course, I went to my Pinterest page where I have been hoarding, saving for future ideas.  I found Caramel Brownies.  Gooey Goodness in a 9 x 13 pan.

Words can't describe how good this tastes.  The recipe says:  "Let cool completely before slicing and serving."  Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright.  Not in my house.  Ever.  Not gonna happen.  So, you can see in the picture that the ice cream has already started to melt  :-)

These are super moist, super rich and ridiculously amazing. I can't wait  to find out tomorrow to see what they taste like "cooled completely".
